NOOOOOOOOO!

NOOOOOOOO.

Does this photo even need more of a caption?

The word "no" is in full effect here at our house. Not only does he know how to use it, which he has for a long time now, but he now knows how to put his attitude into it. I mean, look at this face while he is saying it. HAHA.

We are all doing great! Ryan as four more days of work, AHH! And we have six days until we hit the road. Our moving company is coming a few days before we move and I think that is when it will all sink it. It is so weird not having done much prepping (packing wise) for this move.

Pregnancy wise, I am feeling pretty good. I can feel the third trimester creeping it's way in though. I get tired so fast and bending over is getting close to impossible.

Ryan, Gavin and I braved the crowds today for Black Friday shopping...well sort of. We woke up at our leisure and went in to the store at 9:00am, just to see if what we wanted was still in stock. We totally scored!! We talked about getting up at 4am to go wait in line for a few things and I am SO glad we didn't, as everything we wanted was still on sale at the same price and still in stock for everything down to the color choices we wanted. On top of practically being done with our Christmas shopping, we were able to get a few items we have been eying for a couple weeks, one being a new electric griddle for less than $10! We also needed to get Gavin some warm winter clothes, as everything we had was for our "cold" fall and winter, LOL. Our store here on base will price match any other store and is also tax free, so our savings automatically includes almost 10% just on that.

I have my Christmas pictures ordered, so if you want one, please send me your mailing address, especially if you have moved in the last year or two, my e-mail is kelsey.scrupps@gmail.com.

Week 25 & 26 | Moving Update

I have been BUSY! We have had a lot to do in the past couple weeks as we got our official moving news so late in the game. I feel like I have been constantly on the phone, trying to figure out what thing or the other...From giving notice to our housing, scheduling shut-offs and turn-ons of utilities, to a few trips to the Hospital (all is good), scheduling movers. to trying to maneuver the new wonderful Affordable Healthcare Act (sarcasm...if you would like to hear an earful about that just ask me, because I am willing to complain and bitch about how it has been a nightmare for us personally...) I can say that it's been pretty hectic here at the Scrupps Household. But, I can say that my fancy dancey checklist is complete, and now it is pretty much just the waiting game. We are going to try to leave California on December 5th, but that might vary by a day or so depending on Ryan getting the proper paperwork he needs to be "released" from the military.

I have been extremely busy with my photography lately, which has been nice as it has helped the time fly by. I have six photo sessions just this weekend. I really should be editing some of my photos, but I need to take a little break for a few!

Pregnancy wise, I have been feeling pretty good. I can feel that third trimester sneaking up on me though, as I am tiring much easier and I am getting that welcomed friend, pelvic pain, returning. It feels like I can literally feel my hips and pelvis being pulled apart. Not cool. But what is cool is that this baby is a MOVER. There is constantly kicking and flipping and jumping and tap dancing on my bladder happening. Other than the bladder part I really enjoy being able to feel the baby, it's a very cool experience.

We've been having fun trying to choose names, and though we haven't really decided we are thinking Kjerstin for a girl and Jamison for a boy. We haven't decided on middle names quite yet but have some good contenders. Even though we are pretty set on both of these names, they are still subject to change, as Gavin's did several times before we settled on his. Choosing a name is one of the hardest things to decide on! It is such a big decision and there are so many different things you need to weigh when making the choice, it's so stressful, haha!

Gavin is doing great, and is damn near talking in sentences. He is putting words together, like "mama's cup, mama's shoes," etc., and pretty soon it's going to be a full blown sentence. He is such a character, he has so much to say, and is constantly talking. And I mean constantly. I think his favorite thing right now is signing and dancing, it is so cute. He runs back and forth in our house "dancing" and signing on this little microphone he got for Christmas last year. It plans Christmas music and when you sign into the mic it makes your voice sound like an elf. We had to change the batteries in the damn thing he has used it so much, haha! He also has already learned the "as soon as mama and dada are talking or get on the phone I am going to be as loud as humanly possible" trick. That's been great.

Ryan is good as well, he has been busy getting his end of things settled for checking out of the Marine Corps. His hours have been a little more flexible which have been nice as he is able to spend more time with Gavin, which Gavin has LOVED. He has become quite the Daddy's boy the past couple weeks. <3

Some "rumor" squashing and 24 Week Update

Just to start out -

We are NOT having twins. It would be very cool, and amazing, however after four ultrasounds, I feel confident in the fact that it is just ONE baby.

Now that we have that out of the way...

24 weeks. 6 months. We are SIX months along already! WOW! It still seems so far away when you think 24 weeks out of 40, but when you think SIX months, it seems like we have very little time left! We are a month over halfway, and that is pretty crazy! I go back and forth between hoping I would wake up and it would be February 25th, so I would only have one more day left of being pregnant, to wishing I was still only just starting my second trimester. (Notice how I didn't want to start at the beginning again...) I am still feeling pretty good, however slowly but surely the remaining symptoms of pregnancy are adding up. I am getting achy, and I can feel my ribs expanding. I feel like expanding ribs is a sort of torture the terrorists would use, it is just as horrible as it sounds. I also realize that I am not a very good advocate for pregnancy! So on that note, I'll share a couple things, pregnancy related, that have been awesome.

This baby is a MOVER. He/she is kicking and moving around all the time. I love it, there is no other experience or way to describe it. Yes, some say it is freaky, and in a sense it kind of is, but it is a miracle and beautiful. I love dreaming about what the baby is going to look like, whose traits he/she will take and if he/she will have Gavin's attitude and personality. I know they will be different, but in what ways? It's fun to imagine them growing up together and I hope that they are best friends. I knew that keeping the baby's sex a surprise would be difficult, but I never knew how much I would love it. This is the one and only true secret and surprise that the world has to offer and having that to look forward to is incredibly amazing. All of these things outweigh every single negative pregnancy symptom you could ever have.

In other news, each year for the Marine Corps Birthday, each Battalion hosts a Marine Corps Ball. The ball for 9th Comm is on Saturday, so I will be pregnant in heels once again for a fun evening of watching a ton of Marines get tanked! Haha! I am excited to get dressed up, and have a night celebrating with friends. We are going with some good friends and I think we are sitting with some fun people, so it should be fun! The ball is being held in San Diego at one of the hotels in Fashion Valley. I hope we have a better time than we did a few years ago! Gavin will be staying home with his "Sasah" (my friend Sarah, who is loves). So we get a child free evening! I'll post pictures as soon as I can!

WE'RE COMING HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I have been waiting to write this post for almost three months now!!! The Scrupps family will be moving home in 29 freaking days!!!!!! There are no words to describe our excitement! We are moving back up to Odessa for GOOD! We are on Cloud Nine and are counting down the days, hours and seconds!

About six months ago we decided that Ryan would apply for an early release program. There were many factors that went into this decision and we had been weighing them for about two years now. We finally decided that we would at least apply for 90 days early, mostly so that Ryan could get back up to the farm to help his Dad. Also - we are just so ready to be home! We had to wait almost two full months after Ryan submitted the application to find out if it was approved or not and we got the final word this week!!

For all of our close family and friends, I will be sending out our Christmas Card with our new address. If you would like to receive one, e-mail me at kelsey.scrupps@gmail.com. Chances are I probably have it, but just in case or especially if you have moved!

Odessa, we will see you SOON!

The Scrupps' will be HOME FOR CHRISTMAS!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

23 Weeks & Ultrasound Check-up

23 weeks down! Still feeling pretty good! My body is really starting to ache, and the heart burn is kicking in. Other than that though I am feeling excellent!

We had to have a follow up ultra sound because in our appointment at 20 weeks, the baby was moving so much they were unable to get a good enough picture of the spine. They asked us to come back in, which we did today. They got what they needed I guess and said everything looks good! This little baby is a moving and a grooving. I told Ryan it's like he/she is doing jazzercise or something! Getting ready to keep up with Gavin I guess!

I'll be back to update this post with some photos and videos. Gavin has been quite the talker lately, it's so cute.

Update:

So the day after I wrote this original post I got a phone call from our Midwife, telling us that the Radiologist who oversees the ultrasound techs still wasn't happy with the images of the spine. Even though he and our midwife said it wasn't because there was something unusual or alarming and not to panic, I panicked. I got three calls within two hours to go in and schedule an appointment. Insert more panic. (I think the tech who did our ultrasound got into a little bit of trouble because he called me himself twice to accommodate me coming in).  Needless to say I was a hot mess the entire morning, assuming the worst and that something was wrong. They asked if I could come in at noon that day, which I did and when I checked in I was told that there was only one tech working and it might be over an hour before I was seen. Besides being worried sick about something being wrong with my unborn child, I was also on the phone and hitting wall after wall with healthcare crap all morning, so it has been a long long day up to this point. I am guessing if looks could kill, I might have killed everyone in the Radiology department of the hospital because the Navy Corpsman checking me in looked up at me and said, "ohhhhh, uhm, ok.....," and needless to say I was in in 10 minutes.

The tech got the images, again, and this time went to show the Radiologist himself before having us leave the room. Two minutes later the Radiologist comes in and says he wants to get the pictures himself. I am literally about in tears at this point because I am thinking something HAS to be wrong. He was very very nice and told me it wasn't that they were seeing anything wrong, it was just that they weren't able to see what they needed to see at all because of the baby's movement and the way the baby was positioned. They poked and prodded the baby to move, I laid around in a couple different positions and he was finally able to get what he needed. He said everything was great, we had a healthy baby and healthy mama. WHEW!!! What a relief!!! I should have asked him for a decent profile picture of the baby in return for the stress he caused me, but of course I didn't think of it until I was in the car on my way home.

And...here are some pictures from the last week or so!

Gavin twirls his hair as a comfort thing, so he always has this little twirl at the top of his head. So cute!
Watching some TV. Such a man/child.
Playing at the park!

22 Weeks...Where is the time going?

I can't believe how fast the time is going. We are still anxiously awaiting some HOPEFULLY good news,  but of course because it's the military we have been playing the hurry up and wait game. Sometimes the military can be so great and sometimes it is the most frustrating thing ever. Anyways...it is what it is!

I've been feeling pretty good lately, tired though! But I haven't been able to fall asleep and then Gavin wasn't feeling very well for a few nights so it has been a combination of a few different things. The baby has been pretty active and moving a lot, and giving me heart burn like crazy already. Hopefully this one has more hair than Gavin had when he was born! My sister-in-law was asking about Gavin's hair color when he was first born, and I couldn't remember exactly how dark it was so I looked back at photos and just had to make this...crazy huh!?
We finally got around to carving the pumpkins we "picked" at Bates Farm last weekend. Gavin was NOT a big fan of the slimy seeds and innerds of the pumpkin. He got it on his toe and was limping around, it was cute. He just kind of went from Ryan and I and back and forth looking at what we were doing. He probably thought it was cool that we were sitting on the floor in the kitchen.

I love the way Gavin sits on the couch sometimes, he is such a man child it cracks me up.

Gavin wasn't feeling well and crashed, downstairs right before his bedtime. This never happens.

21 Week Update

We had our latest baby check-up today with our midwife. I think I like her more and more every time I see her! Gavin and I were at this appointment and it was nice and short! We have to go back in for another ultrasound because the baby was moving too much to get a really clear picture of the spine, but the radiology tech said that there were no abnormalities, I think they just want to be 100% sure, which I appreciate.

PRAISE THE LORD my blood pressure has been normal the last couple times I have gone! I KNEW it wasn't me having high blood pressure as a medical problem, it is just my anxiety about being in a doctors office. I was very happy about that today! The midwife also made a comment on how I hadn't gained any weight (HA!) but that the baby was still growing so at this point it's nothing to be concerned about. Uhm. I look like a balloon, how is that even possible?! The baby is a VERY active one, the heart beat was 160, and was flipping around while we were listening in.

I had expressed some questions about having a natural delivery, after having had a C-Section, and I was curious if I would be pressured into having an epidural right away just in case I would have to have an emergency c-section (1% chance due to rupture of the uterine lining from cesearean scaring) and she said that they can usually put them in pretty fast so if I wanted to try it drug free I could. I told her obviously I hadn't personally experienced contractions yet and was leaving my option to demand an epidural at anytime but I wanted to attempt it. She said I would really have to practice. She said to do meditated breathing (HIPPY, but I'll still probably give it a try) and then to hold ice cubes in my hands for small amounts of times and to breathe through the pain of the cold. I thought that was interesting. Can you imagine Ryan coming down to our living room one night to find me meditating, holding ice cubes and breathing through freezing pain? I'm gonna make sure it happens.

That was about all the excitement from today! I wish I had some pictures to upload, but unfortunately I do not, sorry!

Pumpkin Picking and Hay Rides!

Ryan and I took Gavin to Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center, CA today so that we could get some pumpkins and take Gavin on a hay ride. It was definitely a city version of a hay ride, haha! It was a tractor pulling a train of trailers, each with a hay bale and a pretty burlap sheet to sit on. It was still fun and Gavin had a blast!! He was laughing and running and looking at all the pumpkins. We saw a petting zoo, and we held him up to the fence and he kept saying "woof woof!" at all the goats. LOL. Nope Gavin, not dogs, close though!

It was 87 degrees, so even though it LOOKED like fall here at Bates Nut Farm, it didn't quite FEEL like it...haha, I guess down here we have to take what we get!

Here are some pics!

20 Weeks HALFWAY!

WOW! I have to admit, the time is kind of flying by. It is funny how different yet the same everything is this time around compared to last time. Sleeping has been much better since I pulled my special pillow out of storage...my sister-in-law recommended me buying this when I was pregnant with Gavin, which I did, but wasn't able to use much because Ryan and I were sharing a full sized bed and space was a bit limited. Now that we have upgraded, I am taking full advantage of my pillow and it has been awesome. The only thing is that switching from side to side can get a bit awkward. I still have to pee pretty much every hour, but I think having this pillow allows me to get comfortable and get into a deeper sleep and not waking up as often and then noticing my need to pee...if that makes any sense?

Here is the amazing pillow I am talking about:

It's pretty glorious.

Overall, I am still feeling pretty good. I can definitely feel that the baby is growing and making itself at home. About two weeks ago or so I finally felt the baby kicking on the outside with my hand, and Ryan was finally able to feel this past week. The other night was a fun one as the baby was going crazy rolling around. Speaking of bladders, I will say that the coincidence of sneezing and having the baby roll or jump on your bladder at the exact same time is rather tragic.

Gavin is doing pretty good. He has been a bit cranky the past couple days and I have seen a side of him that not many people should see. Let me just say that I had a wooden train set go flying at my face, missing me by a few inches. I don't think that will be happening again anytime soon. I am hoping I scared a little bit of Jesus into him. Throwing train sets at his mother...geesh...

He can say, or repeat rather, the entire alphabet! I am so proud! I made a video of it on Ryan's phone, but I was having problems uploading it to YouTube to share, so I'll try and get it up because he is so funny. He has to clap and celebrate himself every four letters or so.

Peek a boo! Gavin thinks this is hilarious. I can't wait until he accidentally does a summer-sault, I'm sure his face will be priceless.

Ryan is also doing well. We are waiting on some exciting news that I can't wait to share, but mum is the word until we get something official.

I've been wanting to put a wreath on our door since fall has started but couldn't find the right one. My friend Sarah and I decided we were going to make our own, and I am so happy with out mine turned out, we were both proud of our craftiness! The flowers are clipped on so I can take them off and change it up for the different seasons.

Gavin | Shriner's Update

Gavin Update & Misc. Odessa Vacation Stuff

We had a check-up at Shriner's for Gavin's foot this week and we were very pleased to have good news! His foot looks great and though it is still a bit tight, we will not have to do casting again and it looks like no more surgeries are in our future! We were told at our last appointment that we might be looking at a surgery to straighten the tendons on the top of his foot (they curve inward slightly) when he was about four years old. Obviously, this is still a possibility, but the doctor said it didn't look severe enough to be corrected with an operation.

It's been a while since I have mentioned anything with Gavin's foot so I'll do a bit of a refresher on his treatment and clubfoot in general.

ALL of you should be familiar with the fact that Gavin was born with clubfoot. I honestly cannot remember if I wrote a blog post specifically about club foot or not, but just in case here it is again...

From Shriner's website here is the definition of clubfoot:

Clubfoot, known to doctors as talipes equinovarus, is a congenital (present at birth) abnormality of the foot.  A common birth defect, clubfoot occurs in approximately one out of 1,000 births in the United States. Clubfoot describes a variety of foot abnormalities in which a newborn’s foot is twisted inward. The actual term, “clubfoot” refers to the way the foot is positioned at a sharp angle to the ankle, similar to the head of a golf club.

If like me, you probably think of a super deformed, elephant type of hoof when you hear clubfoot. I was in total denial when the doctor suspected clubfoot when Gavin was born. When he got the "official diagnosis" at Rady's Children Hospital in San Diego, I cried like I just found out my son was never going to be able to walk and would be deformed forever. I had no idea what clubfoot really was and how common it seems to be.

There are several ways to treat it, but there is the best and newest way which is with casting and stretching. This is called the Ponsetti Treatment. When babies are first born there bones, ligaments and tendons are easily manipulated. When they put a cast on a child with club foot, they are literally moving their bones and manipulating them to grow and strengthen into the direction you want them to grow. It is quite amazing really.

The old way of treating it was with surgery, and from what I have heard from those who have either had it or from research online, it wasn't pretty. Most people would relapse at some point and would be very limited on activities they were able to do, either at all or because of stiffness and pain. Our doctor at Shriner's actually studied under the doctor who developed the new way of treatment, Dr. Ponsetti, and the casting and stretching takes away the odds of relapse by more than 50% compared to surgery alone.  So, it's a pretty big deal.

So our treatment with Gavin has involved casting every week for a total (two separate treatments) of 10 weeks and then he wears orthopedic shoes at night every night until he is about four years old (when relapse is least common). He also had a very minor "surgery" to lengthen his heel cord/Achilles Tendon. It was a minor surgery that the incision was so small they couldn't even put a stitch in it to close it.

Once Gavin graduated to wearing the shoes at night, he will go back to Shriner's for check-ups every four-six months. They check the flexibility of his foot and make sure he is meeting all the milestones appropriate with his age (in relation to his foot, e.g., walking, running, jumping, etc.).

We saw several different doctors throughout this process and Shriner's was by far the BEST out of all of them. They take the time to explain everything and also give us choices in what works best for our son's treatment. Our other doctors always dominated the conversations and never gave us any real options when it came to OUR son's health and treatment.

So, now you are a little more educated on club foot and how Gavin is doing!

Quick Picture Post..more to come, check back for update.

Several months ago we purchased tickets to go Blue Whale watching down here in San Diego, out of Mission Bay. We decided to wait until my parents were down here so we wouldn't have to pay for a baby sitter for an entire day, got to save the money some how, haha!

The tour was three hours long (yes I did have the theme to Gilligan's Island stuck in my head) and I would estimate we went about 10-15 miles off the coast of San Diego. We could still see land easily, and it didn't take us too long to get where we eventually spotted the whales.

In total we saw about 10 blue whales and 2-3 gray whales. It was so cool! We weren't able to get extremely close, but when an animal is that big, being 100 yards away is more than ok with me! There is no way that words or photos could do it justice. Seeing those whales was incredible and definitely crossed an item off of my checklist. I never thought I would be able to see the biggest animal in the world in my lifetime. I love it!

These are a few photos from our trip up in Odessa and our road trip back down to California. We were able to drive with my parents in their motor home from Washington to San Diego. We took highway 395 which went through the Tri-Cities and then down Eastern/Central Oregon and down the Eastern part of California. It was gorgeous! It actually didn't take that much time in comparison especially for all the windy mountain roads we drove on. Once we got to Reno, we cut across California to get back to I-5 and connected in Sacramento. We were able to see our cousins and finally meet their daughter who is only a few months younger than Gavin. She is also pregnant again, and we are two weeks apart with our pregnancies. We know how to plan things in our family, haha!

Our new little neice, Alma Joan. She is so precious!! I loved getting to hold and snuggle her! It is crazy how fast they grow up, I felt like a newbie all over again holding her in comparison to Gavin. I have to retrain my newborn mommy skills!!

Tips for Flying With a Toddler

A little bit of a different post today, a few friends have asked about flying with Gavin and I knew I personally scoured the internet for advise for flying with a baby and now toddler. I am in no way shape or form a professional at this so you can take all of this with a grain of salt!

The first thing you need is something you cannot buy. It is patience. You have to go into your day of traveling knowing that you have the possibility of EVERYTHING going wrong, your child WILL throw a trantrum at the most inopportune time and all the meanwhile you will be hot and sweaty and flustered and embarrassed and PISSED OFF. But I promise you, it will be so much better if you keep your cool. Calm down, take a deep breath, eventually your traveling will be over and you can laugh at it later. You will look back and laugh at how you had to bring a screaming infant through the security, and that the TSA agents wouldn't let you change a blowout diaper, and that you would have to throw away a cute pair of pajamas before even boarding your first plane. You will laugh at it, eventually!

You will also want to make sure you have all the information you need for your airline. For example, we usually fly Southwest and their plan for flying with children is that two years and younger fly free on your lap. Once they are over two you have to buy them their own seat, though they might offer a cheaper price for you (you have to call). Please remember this: YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR CHILD'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE, This is extremely important. They might not let you on the plane if you do not have this or some other official documentation of your child's cage. It's almost funny because they do not care about identifying the child to you for safety purposes or to check that you are not kidnapping this child, they are checking the age of the child to see if they can charge you or not...Ridiculous, but still, don't forget to bring it!

Next is, well at least with Southwest (check your own airline) is that even if you do not buy your child a seat of their own on the plane, they might have extra seats and you to use. So if you are bringing a car seat (which I highly recommend, and that is coming up soon) you can put your child in their own seat and you will have extra hands and it will change the entire trip for you. Always ask when you are checking in for your flight if there are any extra seats.

As for what to bring with you, this is what I would start with:

-Travel documents, ID for yourself, Birth Certificate, Wallet, phone and phone charger
-Normal Diaper Bag with extra of nearly everything especially diaper, wipes, bottles/sippy, and binkies
-Extra outfits for child and extra shirt for yourself (if traveling with a baby)
- Stroller (you can check this at the door of the plane. It is so worth bringing it with you)
-Moby wrap or equivalent baby carrier, especially if you are not bringing a stroller
-Car seat (You can check this at the door of the plane also. I recommend bringing it with you even if the plane will be first because you do not want it to become lost luggage and you will be left without a car seat at your destination!)

-Bring lots of toys and books and snacks! Fun toys, new toys, new books, favorite books! You cannot have enough of any of these things. Make sure the toys aren't too loud for the passengers around you.
-Ipad or tablet or phone if you child likes that sort of thing. Load a tv show or movie on it. Remember your charger!
-Blanket or changing mat so you can change your child's diaper if there isn't a changing station in the bathrooms. Also a blanket comes in handy for layovers to let your child sprawl out and play in the terminal without getting the airport germs all over them.
-My newest item to bring for my toddler is a backpack with a leash on it. Yes I said it. Yes it is happening. He is so independent and wants to walk on his own and God forbid you try and hold his hand. He will not be controlled! Haha, so we bought him an Eddie Bauer backpack that he wears and it has a little harness/leash on it and he doesn't even know he isn't in control of the show! Plus he can carry his own toys and misc. items so it clears out space in my carry on bag!
 (purchased ours at Target)

-Bring a few ziplock bags to store dirty clothes in, or to put electronics in to keep them from spilled bottles and sippy cups, etc.
-My last piece of advise is to remember what you packed, write it down, type it up and use it EVERY single time. Make note of what works and what doesn't and make appropriate changes. It makes packing so much easier the next time around. I've attached a copy of my current packing list for vacations. On this list I include everything, from confirmation numbers for hotels and flights to phone numbers of people we are visiting (if needed) and what will be in my carry on bag. I am a list maker but even Ryan respects the list!

Hope you find this helpful!

15 Week Update

We are getting so close to half-way that it is scary! I can't believe how fast yet slow this pregnancy is going this time around. I am so so so so thankful to be in my second trimester. I appreciate more than I ever did the last time! I am feeling so much better. Pretty much nausea is gone with very few exceptions and the only symptom I have is I am feeling tired. Oh, and I am feeling fat. But, that one is kind of a given...

This past week has been great, I have so much more energy. I can feel my body moving and changing making room for the baby already. I hope it's not TOO big! (I think I mentioned before that we are keeping the gender a surprise!) I have also felt a few flutters and twirls from the baby, nothing too big now, so I am looking forward to more of that and when Gavin can feel the baby move. He is going to love that! He gets that there is a baby in my tummy, but he thinks everyone has a baby in their tummy. So, that has some potential for some very awkward moments! According to the "books" our baby is the size of an avocado and will soon be doubling in height and weight in the upcoming week or two. It could explain why my appetite has greatly increased. The timing couldn't be more perfect with Fest coming up soon! I have the best excuse ever to stuff my face!

I am so looking forward to our trip up to Washington to meet little Alma. It is crazy how fast you forget so many things about newborns, so it will be a nice little refresher for me and I am curious how Gavin will do meeting her as well! We are hoping Ryan will have the opportunity to meet us up there but as for now it's just Gav and I. Somehow I always end up flying by myself with him, I am starting to think it's more than just coincidence...haha, I am totally kidding, Ryan has some work stuff and is really bummed he cannot come at the same time as us (if at all!).

Well, I just went to upload some pictures and videos and got completely distracted watching nasty videos of people lancing cysts on YouTube so with that I leave you these two videos, the first one is Gavin saying Alma's name, we call her Cousin Mamba now, and then the second is Gavin's obsession with wearing our shoes around, it's so funny.

Good night!

Ryan's Sergeant Promotion

This week has been a very exciting week in the Scrupps family! For starters, we have a new family member that was born yesterday!!! Our niece, Alma Joan Scrupps was welcomed into the world by her parents, Amber and Chris (Ryan's brother). She was 8lbs 4 oz and has the cutest roundest face I have ever seen! I can't wait to get up to Washington to meet her in person! This brings our nieces and nephew count up to, nine! How crazy is that! I love how once I married Ryan my family size was increased by probably 1000%. Oh, and I am totally serious, I love it, I LOVE big families, so much fun!

Ok, but to the main point of this post. Ryan was promoted to Sergeant this week! We have "known" it was coming for a bit, but as with everything in the military you never really know until it is official with paperwork and everything! I am SO proud of him. This has been a major goal for him since originally joining and by him making Sergeant in three years is a very very big deal. He has worked very hard and deserves it more than anyone I know!

For promotions for NCO's (Non Commissioned Officers) they have a Battalion Formation where they are pinned with their chevrons (which declare rank on their uniforms). So the entire 9th Communications Battalion was in formation behind Ryan and the other's who were being promoted to either Corporal or Sergeant. For those of you who are not rank savvy (myself included, I am still learning) it goes:

Junior Marine Ranks:
Private
Private First Class
Lance Corporal

NCO Ranks:
Corporal
Sergeant

The next rank would be Staff Sergeant, which you have to have at least been Sergeant for five years (I believe) unless you are promoted meritoriously.

Here are some photos from the formation/promotion ceremony!

Here they had been pinned and were saying the NCO Creed.
So I had to combine three pictures together to show you most of the 9th Comm Bn that was standing in formation behind Ryan and the rest of those getting promoted. Also, I might mention that it was SO HOT out. These poor people were all standing in the sun for nearly an hour. It was so hot out that there were literally more than 30 people who fainted or nearly passed out during the formation. People were dropping like flies!
Our little family after the ceremony!
For the "pinning" which is getting your new rank chevrons put on your uniform, they can choose anyone they want to pin them. I believe if it's another Marine they have to at least be your rank or higher. Ryan chose to have Master Sergeant Bettencourt (who has been a mentor to Ryan and also was deployed with Ryan on LKG) and Gavin (obviously Gavin was too young so I technically pinned it!). We got Gavin his own little Marine cover to wear and a Marine Corp t-shirt which I glued on his own name tape (what the Marine Corps calls the embroidered name tags that are sewn on to their uniforms).
Ryan with Master Sergeant Nick Bettencourt. He is one of my favorite people Ryan has met through the Marine Corp. He is so friendly and has meant a lot to Ryan throughout his time in the Marines.

So there you have it! Congratulations to Sergeant Ryan Scrupps!

You also got a little lesson on how the Marine Corps works! :)

13 Weeks and Potentially More Than You Probably Want To Read...

Just a heads up, I'm feeling rant-y tonight. I'll try and keep it like the news and have the important and interesting things in the beginning and then you can skip to the end, there might be pictures.

First things first...pregnancy update:

13 weeks this week, going on 14! I have been slowly feeling better and better each day. I can feel my energy building and my overall sickness seems to, though a little slower, fading as well. My nausea prescription, is amazing. I would marry it if I wasn't already married...Tonight, I had my first "drop everything and go get it by whatever means necessary" craving. It was for Starbursts candy. Luckily I have an amazing husband who obliged and took us to go get them at like 8:15pm tonight, haha! Our next appointment is in the second week of September, and by then we will be in the second trimester already.

Gavin and Ryan are both doing well. Gavin is just getting so smart it is unbelievable. His brain is a little sponge and for the first time he repeated a word that I use frequently. I know you are all soooo curious on what that is! Kay, I'll tell ya.

It's "Kay." Instead of Okay, I usually just say Kay, and I must say it quite a lot because Gavin has started saying it. It is so cute! Of all things to repeat, that is probably the best, HAHA! He is so funny.

He is also still loving the word "no." We will ask him a question, and he will "think" about it and then just say "NO!" He is communicating better and better each day, he wants to talk SO BAD! He will say a "sentence" even though is jibberish, he says the same thing/sound each time for whatever it is he is trying to say. Lord knows what that is, but Gavin does I guess! He has been singing a lot which is cuter than cute, I have yet to catch it on video though! He also does this weird thing, he sing/yells/says, "Ohhwisssahhhhhhhhhhh!" and during the "ahhhhh" part his mouth is wide open and he sort of sign/yells it and shakes his head. It is hilarious, and I have no idea what he is doing or trying to say or sing.

I watch another little boy twice a week, I know I have briefly mentioned it. Well, Gavin has been picking up some not so pleasant habits of his...When this other little boy doesn't get his way, he throws himself to the floor and pouts, and Gavin started doing that this week. Gavin is going to be up for a rude awakening when he realized that kind of behavior is not going to get him very far in life. It will get him from his little spot on the floor, to his little spot on the corner. This other little boy whines when he doesn't get his way or when Gavin steals his toys (somewhat justified whining...) I HATE pouting, and I hate whining. So, unfortunately, this has been a little bit of a rough week in the learning curve for Gavin. I know that he is just modeling behavior he sees from the other boy and he doesn't realize necessarily he is being naughty, but he soon will.  As a side note, I will say that this other little boy is not a bad boy at all, he is very sweet and as well mannered as a three year old can be! He has some speech issues and isn't talking at all yet, so I know that also has a lot to deal with his behavior, it is hard when you can't physically say why you are mad or what you are mad at. So I get it, Gavin however, can (mostly) so his excuses aren't quite as justified, HAHA!

Ryan has been busy at work as usual, he is finally back in his shop and has been working later than usual which sucks. I feel like I hardly see him! It could be much worse though, and I need to count my blessings.

Ok, well, I guess I am getting to tired to go on much more from here...Here are a couple of the things that are on my mind, however lucky you, I am too tired to get into. I just need a little rant because they are bothering me in the news every day...

Manning: I not care about his gender identity, he can figure that out on his own time. Our government does not need to pay for his hormone medications. That is something HE can pay for on HIS time. For now, he is going to pay for the crimes that he committed against our country. He is a traitor who committed treason. His gender identity is the least of our problems. The real problem is that he was only sentenced 35 years. For aiding our enemies?!?!!?!? Even though this was a while ago, what if this information could have hurt my husband, or our brother. That shit is not forgivable and you better freaking believe that his gender identity issues is not a worthy excuse for what he has done. Stepping off soap box.

ObamaCare: I am literally reading the actually bill, and it is horrible. HOW? WHY? WHO? Do we have animals writing and passing our bills and laws!? That is the only acceptable answer for how this got passed forward. So many things wrong, I can't even get started.

Thankfulness: Lately, I have been in a state of mind where I am looking forward to the next thing, buying time until the next chapter, and I have to keep reminding myself to check back in to the current reality. I saw a quote that really sunk in and I need to live my life by this:

"What if you woke up tomorrow with ONLY the things you thanked God for today?"

And with that, I leave you...powerful isn't it?

11/12 Week Update

Here we are again, with our weekly pregnancy updates! This is the last few days of our 12th week, and it seems like time is already flying! As I mentioned earlier, this time around I haven't been feeling well, and seem to have every possible symptom I could have. Well, not TOO much has changed however I have had some relief from a prescription for nausea and then taking different prenatal vitamins at night instead of in the morning. Our midwife suggested taking two children's chewable vitamins instead as they provide the same nutrients as a prenatal vitamin so I have been doing that. Overall it's helped, however it has had a weird side effect...You know how you always hear about weird food cravings/diversions(?) (I'm not sure if that is the right word, but food you used to like all of a sudden seems repulsive) and also how certain food gives you a weird taste in your mouth even though it has to be completely in your head because there is no way it could possibly taste like that? Well, with my vitamins, the after taste that I get tastes the way that raw meat juice smells. So for like 45 minutes after taking my vitamins, I am wanting to vomit because all I can think about is raw red meat and chicken juice in my mouth. NASTY RIGHT?

Luckily it goes away, and I feel much better throughout the day! I would much prefer that to feeling like throwing up literally 17 hours of the day! I feel like I am slowly getting some energy back, and I am sure that has a lot to do with not feeling quite as sick. I am hoping that each week will get a little bit better! I am starting to show a little bit, but it's probably still only noticeable to me. I feel way to bloated in my jeans so I whipped out the maternity ones and the leggings...oh joy!!! Actually, I don't mind them too much, it's almost like wearing sweats because they are pretty comfortable.

Gavin and I are finally over our colds, thank goodness!!! Ryan just finished up on the rifle range, and is doing well also! Not too much else to update...

Gavin's First Haircut

We finally caved. Ryan and I have been mentioning cutting Gavin's hair for months, and we have both been relunctant to do it. But it was finally to the point where Gavin's little curls were just a hot mess, it was tangled and fluffy and just needing a good trim. Nothing crazy!

I didn't want to take too much off because I love his cute little baby hair, and it was good that was my goal because he wouldn't sit still for me to do much anyways!

Here are some pics:

"Surprise!"

Even though I am about 99% sure all you who actually read this blog probably know already, but...

I've been waiting to officially announce anything until we actually heard the heart beat!

Today, we went it for our first official doctors appointment and had the first ultra sound. It was great. We are due February 26th, the baby measured a little big and the computer calculated a February 24th date, but our midwife (yes...midwife, I'll get to that later!) is sticking with the February 26th date..as if it matters, babies do not care about your little pretend due date. I'm just glad it isn't a leap year!

So far this pregnancy has kind of knocked me on my ass. I was not expecting this type of symptoms, as my last pregnancy was mostly a breeze. I have been so sick, so tired, and just so BLA. I threw up more than I ever did the first pregnancy within the first couple weeks. Luckily, I have been able to hold off the vomiting with mind over matter as I know that what is making me feel sick isn't what is in my stomach it's just my hormones. I also started taking my prenatal vitamins at night, which has helped tremendously. My midwife told me today that I could try taking two children's vitamins instead of the prenatal vitamins, as I would get the same amount of vitamins needed, but they are a lot less harsh. I will be trying that. She also gave me a prescription for anti-nausea, so I am extremely excited to see if that gives me some relief.  I've been so fatigued too which I never had as bad with Gavin. I have no energy to do anything. Somedays it is literally a battle to get off the couch. I have hated feelings this way, I feel like such a blob. I am very anxious for the second trimester to get here. Also, this baby better be a girl because I'm not sure if I want to sign up for this again, hahahaha!

So, back to the midwife comment, generally I would lean more towards a medical doctor for a majority of my personal health needs, it's a personal choice...That being said, with our last doctor, I was really disappointed with all of the pushiness for unnecessary tests, scaring you with "do not do this, do not do that's," and then leaning more towards medical intervention (i.e., pushing you towards c-sections, etc.) So I was thinking about alternatives, and then realized that it can actually be difficult to find a doctor who is willing to let you do a VBAC which is a natural delivery, after a cesarean. I am determined to deliver naturally, without a c-section this time, if I am able. Obviously if we have another breech baby I do not have a choice, but I do not want to be told I have to have a c-section just because a doctor deems it easier. SO....I was thinking a midwife might be our best bet. I was thrilled to learn that the Naval Hospital here has midwifery in the OB-Gyn department and was going to ask about that option. Well, I went in to start my process of getting into the OB-GYN department (stupid military hospitals and their processes) and I was seen by a Navy medical doctor. He told me that he would want me to try a VBAC and that the Naval Hospital in general was very supportive, if not, encouraging about it. I was very happy with this information. He told me that even though he was a family medicine doctor I could still continue to see him, however it all depended on the referral process with insurance, bla bla bla. Well, after I had my in-take appointment, they just assigned me to a midwife. So long story short, that is how we ended up with a midwife...I actually really liked her, and didn't get the "hippy" vibe that I was expecting. She seems like the perfect mix of natural and western medicine that I like. I very pleased so far!

Gavin has been practicing the word "baby" and says it like a champ! When I ask him where the baby is? he points at my belly. He obviously has no idea what any of it means, it is just his newest circus trick, but hopefully he will start to get it! When we ask him if he wants a baby brother or sister he just says yes and nods. Haha, too cute!

More from July & Daddy Coming Home!

I am glad to report that Ryan is FINALLY back from Florida! Gavin and I have been "roughing" it for the past two weeks while Ryan was in Tampa doing some training for work. He had a pretty good time! I am not going to lie, I was a bit envious of him...haha! Though, I'm not sure how I would have faired in the that Florida humidity.

I wanted to make sure that Gavin was busy, mostly so he wouldn't be cranky that Dada wasn't home, so I tried to do several activities "treats" with him. Like I mentioned we went to Playwerx, and to the beach. Well, we also went and got frozen yogurt and happy meals at McDonalds together. Gavin's "favorite" thing though was meeting Elmo. I wish you could sense my sarcasm when I say the word favorite.

The company who leases our house here on base, Lincoln Military Housing, is really good at planning weekly and monthly events. One thing I noticed in our newsletter was "Play Dates" that were being sponsored by a Joint Medical health service place here in Oceanside. I saw that Elmo was going to be coming to meet the kids, and that there were giveaways, story time and free massages for the moms. Well, obviously you had me at meeting Elmo...HA yeah right, free massage....So we went! I got my little massage and Gavin got to play with little kids. And then it happened. Elmo. I didn't even see it coming, but Gavin did and the second he laid eyes on that red furry creature, Gavin was a stage five clinger. He had an iron grib on my leg and was scaling me like...running out of analogies. But he was climbing up me to make sure I was holding on to him to protect him from the beast.

This was after we tried sitting on Elmo's lap. This was literally as close as I could be to Elmo and let Gavin down. He kept one eye on Elmo and one eye on me.

I tried to show him all the other kids dancing and hugging Elmo, and how funny and silly it was. Nope. Not fooled. Well, Elmo sat down and was making itself available for picture time. Of course I had to try. Well, it didn't go well. When it was our turn, I walked towards Elmo to set Gavin on its lap and I don't think I would have been physically able to release Gavin's grip from me. It was hilarious. Well, until Gavin started whimpering in fear, and then I felt bad and gave up. We just watched Elmo at a distance.

So that was something that we did to entertain our time while Daddy was gone. Another thing we did was master the meaning of "timeout." Gavin has been mastering the tantrums and learning how to press the perfect buttons. Well, one of my is hitting. So every time he hits me, he gets to visit timeout. Needless to say, he makes timeout look good. I smile and laugh while his little nose is in the corner because he looks so cute!

Gavin's newest phrase is "Cheese!" We taught him how to say it, for literally cheese, his string cheese which is one of his favorite snacks. Well, I started teaching him to say it so that he smiles in pictures. And it is SO cute!!! Now, he will pick up my phone and just say "Cheese!" hhahaha!

Our July in a nutshell...

Well, not TOO much is new around here lately! :)

We are laying low lately! I've been so annoyed with our weather lately, it's been so gloomy! Usually we have the June Gloom, but it has lasted for a majority of July too! Bascially, it's a very low Marine Layer that covers the coast, and maybe four miles inland or something, and it is just grey! It usually is supposed to burn off by noon, but lately it has been lasting all day, every day. So it is just warm and muggy, yuck! I hate humidity! It's been about 80% humidity, so pretty gross, but could be worse!

I finally got Ryan to help me plant some grass to fill in the spots in our "backyard." I have been DILIGENTLY watering it like he told me too and guess what...IT CAME UP! (I'm not sure if I blogged about it last summer, but we tried to plant new grass in Odessa and well...it didn't turn out very great). I will post some pictures soon! I am going to wait until we cut it as we had to wait until the new grass was at least two inches tall, but all the grass that was there is like a jungle and looks pretty trashy.

Gavin and I checked out a new location the other day, it is called PlayWerx in Carlsbad, CA. OH my goodness. He was in heaven! It's like an indoor playground, but everything is soft and bouncy. Gavin was literally running and laughing and screaming. He was in heaven! We played for two hours straight, and he was pooped afterwards! I can't wait to take him back again with Daddy this time! Here is a video and some pictures from our little outing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMLjxD9l1AQ

Some other big news is that Gavin is off the bottle! THANK THE LORD! It's been my fault. I haven't been very active on weaning him. I got him down to two bottles a day (morning and night) before our Odessa Vacation, but thought it might be best to wait until we were home to completely wean him for ease sake. Well, that came and went and he was still on the bottle. So three days ago I decided enough was enough and I told him as I was giving him his "nigh nigh" bottle, that this was the last one and that tomorrow the bottles have to go buh-bye. He gave me a confused look...

Then morning came and the power had gone out that night, and my phone was dying so we went to the car to charge it and had breakfast in the car. With the distraction, excitement of playing in the car and change of schedule, he didn't ask for his bottle once.

Gavin playing in the car while I was charging my phone. Also, may I add, this is like the 7th time we have lost power is less than six months. UGH!

That night, he had a little milk in his sippy cup, but then after he went to bed he woke up every two hours, and one of those wake ups he was screaming for his "bah bah." It was sad, but I stayed strong and he hasn't asked for once since! It has been three downs now, bottle free!

Alrighty, here are some random new photos over the past few weeks!

 Check out those cheeks!
He's learned how to say "cheese!" Now he grabs my phone and says CHEESE! What? It's like I take a few pictures of him or something?
I love this chumba wumba. He is watching Dora the Explorer. Poor mommy!
Gavin and I had a date at the beach the other day! It was FINALLY a sunny day!

The many faces of my Gavin.
